Baseball

In 1919, philosopher Morris Raphael Cohen described baseball as America’s national religion. Baseball has a unique place in American culture, yet only 16% of American sports fans polled in 2008 named baseball as their favorite sport. While I wouldn’t call myself a baseball fan, I can think of no better place to be than at a ballpark for a good 4th of July celebration. Our thanks to Ricky and Amy for making that happen again this year.

It was the twentieth anniversary for Five County Stadium, home of the Carolina Mudcats, double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The Mudcats took the field to play the Jacksonville Suns. The weather was perfect, the crowd large and enthusiastic, and we saw a good game — topped off with a brilliant fireworks display.

I like that there is no clock in baseball. It’s easy to relax and enjoy a slower pace for a while. We should go to the ballpark more often.

We enjoyed having you guys! Wish I had been able to watch the game with you, but I know you had a great time with the Rays.

Looking forward to seeing you guys again soon. Love you both.
